The Trump admin just hit pause on five major offshore wind projects off the East Coast, effective immediately. They’re citing national security risks flagged by the Pentagon – stuff like turbine blades messing with radar (creating “clutter” that hides real threats or makes fake ones) and vulnerabilities near big population centers.
The projects on hold:
- Vineyard Wind (Massachusetts)
- Revolution Wind (Rhode Island/Connecticut)
- Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (Virginia’s massive one)
- Sunrise Wind (New York)
- Empire Wind (New York)
These were all under construction and could’ve powered millions of homes + created thousands of jobs. Now everything’s frozen while they “assess mitigation” with DoD – no end date given.
Interior Sec Doug Burgum: “Prime duty is protecting Americans from emerging risks.”
Pro-wind side is pissed – calling it political sabotage, saying these were already vetted by military agencies, and it’ll jack up energy costs + kill clean power progress.
Anti-wind folks are cheering: “America first, no foreign-owned turbines threatening our coasts.”
This comes right after a judge smacked down a broader wind block attempt, so they’re leaning hard on the natsec angle now.
What do you think – legit security concern or just anti-renewables vibes?
Or are we all just gonna pay more for power while data centers suck up everything? Drop your takes below ![]()
