A new study has revealed the states winning the most from Mega Millions jackpots, and New York comes in fifth place.
The research, conducted by Bettor In Green, analyzed every Mega Millions jackpot since 2002, comparing total winnings to state population to identify which states have been the luckiest.
New York’s Jackpot Stats
New York has brought in nearly $4.737 billion in Mega Millions winnings across 42 jackpots — more than any other state. Adjusted for population, that equals about $23.8 million in winnings per 100,000 residents.
The state’s biggest prize came in 2023, when Queens resident Johnnie Taylor scored $483 million. Other standout wins include $437 million on Long Island (2019), $431 million in Manhattan (2021), and $326 million in Wurtsboro (2014).
The Luckiest States
When adjusted per 100,000 residents, Maine takes the crown, despite only one jackpot win — worth over $1.3 billion. Thanks to its small population, Maine’s per-capita winnings tower over the rest.
Here’s how the top 5 shakes out:
1. Maine – $95.9M per 100K residents
2. New Jersey – $40.8M
3. Illinois – $30.4M
4. South Carolina – $28M
5. New York – $23.8M
Expert Take
Justin Koch, Head of Data & Research at Bettor In Green, explained:
“Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, and only 29 have won a jackpot. It’s clear from this research that certain states are winning significantly more than others.
With that being said, you have a chance at winning big in any state that plays Mega Millions, and you might just buy the winning ticket for the next draw.”
